The Secret Life of Houdini
Since his death eighty years ago, Harry Houdini’s life has been chronicled in books, in film, and on television. Now, in this groundbreaking biography, renowned magic expert William Kalush and best-selling writer Larry Sloman team up to find the man behind the myth. Drawing from millions of pages of research, they describe in vivid detail the passions that drove Houdini to perform ever-more-dangerous feats, his secret life as a spy, and a pernicious plot to subvert his legacy.
After years of struggling on the dime museum circuit, Harry Houdini got a break that put him on the front page of a Chicago newspaper. He never looked back. Soon Houdini was performing for royalty, commanding vast sums, and exploring the new power of Hollywood to expand on his legend. At a time when spy agencies frequently co-opted amateurs, Houdini went to London and developed a relationship with a man who would run MI-5. For the next several years, the world’s most famous magician traveled to Germany and Russia and routinely reported his findings.
After World War I was successfully concluded, Houdini embarked on a battle of his own. He created a group of disguised field operatives to infiltrate the seamy world of fake spirit mediums. In doing so, Houdini triggered the wrath of fanatical Spiritualists, led by the esteemed British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Death threats became an everyday occurrence, but the group would pose an even greater danger to Houdini’s legacy.
Rigorously researched, and as exciting as a good thriller, The Secret Life of Houdini traces the arc of the master magician’s life from desperate poverty to worldwide legend, initiating the reader along the way into the arcane world of professional magic. In this remarkable book, Kalush and Sloman decode a life based on deception, providing an intimate and riveting portrayal of Houdini, the man and the legend.

Bible Erdnase ***Sold Out***
The Expert at the Card Table by S.W. Erdnase is a classic book detailing sleight of hand and cheating techniques using playing cards and has been in continual publication since 1902. It is referred to as the card man’s “Bible” for its revolutionary content. We took this literally and have reproduced a beautiful new edition in Bible-like form. With an all new typeset and numbered lines, you can now reference “Erdnase” as if citing verses from a Bible. Now with free domestic shipping!
Printed on lightweight offset paper, the same paper used for Bibles, with gilt edges, a ribbon placeholder, and bound in a soft leatherette. This edition really does look exactly like a Bible. Measuring only slightly larger than a deck of cards, and only a quarter of an inch thick, the Bible Erdnase is perfect for your pocket.
The Conjuring Arts Research Center has published a refined, Bible-Like, edition that fits in your pocket. With an all new typeset and numbered lines you can now reference sleights via the Bible verse method. De viribus quantitatis by Luca Pacioli ***Sold Out***
An extremely elegant three volume boxed set featuring a facsimile of Luca Pacioli’s original manuscript in old Italian, an analysis in modern Italian, and a summary and commentary in English. This manuscript, dating from the 1490s, is possibly the first book primarily devoted to magical effects and contains one of the first complete descriptions of a card trick. Although mainly in Italian, this will be a valuable edition for your library due to the importance of the original work and the marvelous production values. (Notice: this is not an English translation!)
The Secret Life of Houdini Boxed Set
The Secret Life of Houdini by William Kalush and Larry Sloman is perhaps the most controversial book ever written about Harry Houdini. Experts are still debating the claims put forth in this ground-breaking biography. Did Houdini really work for the Secret Service? Did he sometimes rely on confederates to accomplish his escapes? Were ardent spiritualists in some way involved in his untimely death?
The authors have now compiled all of their notes and sources into a beautiful companion volume. The Secret Life of Houdini Laid Bare provides a fascinating peek into the voluminous files that were collected from all parts of the world. Plus, all of the material that was edited out of the biography appears in Houdini Laid Bare for the first time. And scattered throughout the book are more than seventy rare photographs relating to the career of the Great Houdini.
Fans of magic history will find that reading both books together will bring each one to life. The books will be sold only as a set. Packaged in a beautiful slipcase you will receive a first edition of The Secret Life of Houdini with a colored frontis piece signed by both authors. The Secret Life of Houdini Laid Bare with 333 pages and a beautiful dust jacket, has a different colored frontis piece also signed by the authors. Each book is numbered and only 1,000 sets have been produced.

These Green Acorn backs were designed by Guy Hollingworth, printed on exclusive Bee Casino 825 paper, and are made with a special coating to ensure the best handling. They’ve been cut the same way as Richard Turner has his cut so they faro and shuffle extremely well. Further they are available in both Cambric and Ivory finishes. [Note: Ivory finish has sold out].
* 12 decks (1 brick) shipped internationally are shipped in two shipments of six decks each. If you would like your brick in its sealed white box, shipped in a cardboard box, the shipping cost is US $44.00. Contact Alexis for this selection.
